Don't hide corrupt people - NPP to NDC

25.11.2002 LISTEN
By DG

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has cautioned the Minority NDC in Parliament not to attempt to use the inner chambers of the august House as a place of refuge where corrupt people could hide from the legal processes of the law.

In a statement issued from the NPP headquarters and signed by the press secretary of the party, Mr Kwadwo Afari, it noted that it is not the intention of the NPP to wade into the problems of Parliamentary rights, privileges and immunities of MPs.

The statement described as “hollow and an uncalled for truculence”, the statement issued by the Minority, Leader, Hon Alban Bagbin, and his NDC group on last week's boycott of proceedings in Parliament in protest against what they described as the 'executive intrusion on the rights and privileges of Parliament'.

The statement observed that it is unfortunate that without citing specific instances of harassment and intimidation, Hon Bagbin merely alluded to the on-going trial of some former officials of the NDC for alleged corruption and malfeasance while in public office.

It emphasised that the NPP hopes that the current boycott is not an attempt to copy Ali Baba's Fatima in a clever strategy to give immunity to alleged corrupt persons and to circumvent the legal process and bend the law to suit a parochial partisan agenda.

The statement reminded the NDC that President J.A. Kufuor's zero tolerance for corruption was not meant to be a mere slogan nor targeted at any one group of persons.

It further reminded Hon Bagbin and his group that if the opposition has any information of wrongdoing by members of government, they would be doing the whole country a world of good by exposing those involved with facts.
