Ex-convict jailed eight years for stealing

Kumasi, June 30, GNA - A 20-year old ex-convict has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment in hard labour by a Kumasi Circuit Court for stealing items valued at GH¢2,395.90, belonging to a lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Henry Benjamin Ackon pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful entry, causing damage and stealing.

Police Chief Inspector Comfort Baffour-Kyei told the Court that the complainants, Kwabena Appiah and Kwaku Wiafe, reside at Appiedu-Kokoben, whilst the convict lives on the University campus.

On June 21, the two were engaged by one Dr Tey, a lecturer at the Engineering Department of the University to clear weeds on a garden he has made behind his bungalow.

As they worked on the farm, they saw Ackon carrying a bag from a nearby bush and they became suspicious.

They, therefore, questioned him and not convinced by his answers reported him to the University security. He was consequently handed over to the police.

The prosecution said Ackon confessed stealing the bag and its contents made up of 19 pieces of wax print, towels, dell laptop, an IBM computer, tea cups, blender and iron from the bungalow of Dr Wiafe Ampofo, who is on a study leave in Rwanda .

He broke into the bungalow using a hammer to knock down the door.
