The Indemnity Clause Must Go.

The Indemnity Clause Must Go.
30.05.2010 LISTEN

That indemnity clause must go
And go it must
Put in the Constitution at the barrel of the gun
Makes the Constitution not worth the paper it is written on

It is by and large a sheer mockery of the rule of law

Yes, a sheer mockery of Freedom and Justice
And indeed, a sheer mockery of Democracy
With the repeal of the indemnity clause
Ghana will be of age
And that fear of the powers that be
Yes, that fear of the barrel of the gun
Cowering most us into living caricatures
Yes, into babbling sycophants and hypocrites
Shall perpetually be a relic of the past
The indemnity clause must go
And JJ Rawlings and his helpers shall be free
To face the full rigor of Justice
Yes, he shall be free in the end to point fingers
He shall be free to call others murderers
Murderers of Yaa Na and Issah Mobilah
He shall be free to call others thieves
And daylight looters of our National treasury
Without an iota of a guilty conscience
The indemnity clause must go
To give JJ and his cohorts a secured platform
A platform to make all the talk about Integrity
And all the talk about Probity
And yes about accountability
Not mere, empty, holier-that-thou, clownish slogans

Rather, the talk of principle and of substance
The indemnity clause must go
To serve as a deterrent to the perpetual putschists

From the wearers of 'Afro Moses' yesterday
To the wearers of designer shoes and suits today
And surely to all wannabe self-appointed heads of state

And to all irate coup plotters
That the arm of Justice is long and heavy
Though the balance of Justice is balanced
For these reasons and many, many others
The indemnity clause must go!
And go it must
