GCPP opens branch in UK
01.11.2002 LISTEN

THE Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) has established a branch of the party in London to cater for its activities in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

The branch, named the GCPP Ghana Foundation, seeks to mobilise logistics for the party's programmes in Ghana in addition to articulating the concerns of the African continent in the two countries.

The leader of the party, Comrade Dan Lartey, said this in an interview in Accra yesterday after a three-week tour of the United Kingdom.

According to him, the opening of the London office of the party will undoubtedly enhance the image and stature of the party in international circles.

Comrade Lartey said the party had appointed Comrade John Afful as the Co-ordinator to oversee its activities until a substantive executive is elected.

The leader of the GCPP said the party has started preparations to hold a congress early next year in London to elect the executive for the U.K. and Ireland branches. Comrade Lartey said the branch will be tasked to set up similar branches of the party in the major cities in then U.K. and Ireland to promote its activities.

Asked why he chose to set up a London branch of the party instead of concentrating on reactivating its structures in the country, he said other political parties in the country has similar problems of breathing life in their restructuring.

“It is not true that the national executive of the GCPP is not doing anything about the part's structures; the party put in place a programme that is addressing the issue in phases”, he said adding that addressing the concerns of the executive in the 200 constituencies is a herculean task that cannot be handled overnight, especially considering the fact that the bottom line of the issue is money.

The GCPP leader said the party has started assessing its performance during the year to ascertain its strengths and weaknesses in a bid to enhance its operations in 2003.
