Tamale, April 22, GNA - Mr. Frederick Safo, the Country Director of Childreach International, a non-governmental organisation, has said teachers were the major pillars of the education transformation system and has provided refresher training for 70 non-professional teachers to improve upon their teaching skills.
He appealed to the government to pay attention to the quality of teachers and prepare them adequately to be able to impact positively on their students.
Mr. Safo was addressing teachers in Tamale on Wednesday during the opening of a one week basic training in Ghanaian language, English and phonetics.
The 70 teachers were recruited and paid monthly by Childreach International and had been teaching in 29 communities of the Savelugu and Nanton districts.
Mr. Safo said all the 70 teachers would by August be sponsored by Childreach International to be enrolled into the Untrained Teachers Diploma in Basic Education (UTDBE) to become professional teachers who would help improve education in the rural areas.
Mr. Joseph Kwaku Asamoah, a Resource person of Childreach International, said there was the need for the country to revisit the introduction of the mother tongue to the child at the first three years at the basic educational level, saying; "It is the sure way of developing the child".
He appealed to the government to develop a comprehensive national language policy that would be used by successive governments to prevent future leaders from changing the policy.
