AFAG attracts 20,142 signatures…in battle against telecom coys

BARELY TWO weeks into the Alliance for Accountable Governance's (AFAG) call on Ghanaians to rise against poor services provided by mobile telecommunications networks in the country, over 20,142 consumers in the Greater Accra Region, The Chronicle learnt, had signed up for the campaign, the pressure group launched recently.

Speaking to the paper in an interview yesterday, the Operations Director of AFAG, Sammy Awuku, described the response from both students, and the rest of the public, as overwhelming.

The campaign for telecommunication efficiency services in Ghana, dubbed “The Voices for Telecommunication Efficiency (VOTE) initiative,” aims to empower consumers to bring out the numerous problems they encounter using these mobile telecommunications networks.

For this intended exercise, AFAG hinted that it had recruited about 820 volunteers from tertiary institutions to collect data and signatures of all consumers across the country, as a starting point to address the inefficiencies.

Mr. Awuku continued that the National Communications Authority (NCA) had come under serious pressure for failing to protect the rights of telecommunications consumers, monitor the activities of operators to comply and give quality services to their loyal customers as mandated.

The pressure group, he hinted, would soon meet with officials of the NCA, to know more about its operations when it comes to protecting the rights of consumers, maintaining that the move should be treated in a non-partisan way, for the benefit of all.

He said volunteers for this campaign have been adequately provided with credits and transportation, assuring the public that they would soon draw closer to them nationwide.

Another startling revelation from sources, says the telecommunications operators, after the AFAG press conference recently, have had their operations running on a pendulum, expressing worry that the group's continuous 'harassment' might affect their businesses entirely.
