Former President Kufuor must end internal strive in NPP

February 14, 2010
Accra, Feb. 14, GNA - Mr Daniel Bugri Naabu, a founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the party's hierarchy to uproot factionalism and other divisive tendencies threatening the peace and unity of the Danquah/Busia Tradition.

He said those fanning such divisions risked jeopardising the party's stake in the 2012 General Election, which should rather serve as a spring board to meet the aspirations of party loyalists and Ghanaians as a whole.

In a statement issued in Accra at the weekend, Mr Naabu called on the former President, Mr John Agyekum Kufuor to bring his experience as two -term Head of State to bear on the NPP by wading into the controversies that seeks to tear the party apart.

Mr Naabu said the Ex President could heal the wounds of the party in a very dispassionate and non-partisan manner, since he represents the largest interest of the NPP as the only surviving President of the Danquah/Busia Tradition.

"Mr Kufuor should therefore use the democratic credentials of the NPP, which he facilitated under his leadership to bear on all interest groups," he said.

The Founding Member cautioned delegates, that will attend the forthcoming National Delegates' Conference slated for Kumasi, not to yield to financial and material inducements to vote for people who cannot serve the interest of the NPP.

He said as delegates they hold the key for the election of national party executives who would ensure the victory of the party in the 2012 general election.

"Prepare your minds to come to Kumasi to vote for the right people who will serve the supreme interest of the NPP," he said.

Commenting on the impending election of a presidential candidate for the party, he asked members of the NPP to view the exercise as their democratic duty to get a winning candidate for Election 2012.

"The process is not limited to the perceived Nana and Alan camps; it is a race for a leader and we must all be circumspective to go for someone who has all the attributes of a team player.

"We are in opposition and we want to win back power. We must therefore get a credible candidate with vision who can pool resources to ensure that NPP bounces back in 2010.

Mr Naabu commended delegates who attended the Northern Regional Delegates Congress, for ensuring the success of the exercise, adding "I wish to thank all those who voted or did not vote for me."
