The management and staff of the Ho Metro Mass Transit, in collaboration with the management and staff of Zoomlion Waste Management Company, have organised a clean-up exercise in and around the Ho sports stadium, as part of activities by the two organisations to rid the municipality of filth.
Workers of the waste management company, and the transport organisation, swept and cleared the stadium and its immediate environment of weeds, where human activity is highly intensive, because most people in the municipality embark on physical activities, as well as economic activities in the area, whereas, less attention is given giving to sanitation.
Speaking to the media after the two hours clean-up exercise in the area, the Volta Regional Coordinator of Zoomlion, Mr. Anthony Adzomani, expressed concern over the attitude of people towards issues of environmental protection, particularly waste management.
Mr. Adzomani stressed the need for all to take sanitation matters more seriously, and cultivate the culture of effective disposal of refuse at designated places, rather than littering the environment indiscriminately, which he noted, called for a change in attitude, to help promote good health among the populace.
He continued that one issue that needed to be addressed was the general apathy associated with environmental protection, particularly in terms of waste management, as people did not care about the consequences of their actions, which the Zoomlion Coordinator pointed out, was dangerous to the growth of society.
The Volta Regional Manager of Metro Mass Transit, Mr. Rexford Addo, observed that it was surprising that when clean-up exercises were being undertaken, some people just look on, laugh and ridicule those engaged in the exercise, which he said, called for regular public education on the importance of such exercises in the society.
Mr. Addo explained that the joint clean-up exercise by the two organisations, formed part of a deliberate attempt to create awareness about the importance of having the environment cleaned regularly, and called on the people to cultivate the habit of healthy lifestyles, by adhering to the basic environmental protection rules.
