THE BRONG Ahafo Regional Police Command has begun disciplinary proceedings against a police officer who allegedly divulged vital information on police operations to criminals.
Lance Corporal Frank Afari, based at Yamfo, was on Saturday picked by a special patrol team during an operation targeted at arresting suspected narcotics dealers, now on the run, in the Yamfo area. He had however been released, but still assisting police investigations.
The police's effort to arrest the criminals was thwarted by L/C Afari as he alerted the suspected drug barons to escape arrest due to the links he had established with them.
DAILY GUIDE' s investigations at Yamfo established that the policeman called the suspected drug dealers earlier to warn them about the impending police operation. However, during the time of the said telephone conversation, the police arrived at the residence of the chief baron, and upon seeing the police, the chief baron left the phone and bolted with his cronies.
L/C Afari, who did not know what had happened, continued to talk on the phone whilst the police patrol team had picked the phone and were listening. This helped the taskforce to know his clandestine activities which led to his subsequent arrest.
The Brong Ahafo Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, Chief Inspector Yaw Nketia-Yeboah, who confirmed the incident to DAILY GUIDE, said appropriate sanctions would be applied if the officer was found culpable after investigations.
He however said though the police was not wholly successful in the operation, they were highly satisfied with the cooperation of the public, disclosing that some people volunteered information to the police which led to the exercise.
He called on members of the general public to keep volunteering information on criminals and suspicious characters to the police for swift action to flush out criminals from the society.
According to Chief Inspector Nketia-Yeboah, the exercise which was targeting drug dens, drug peddlers and crime prone areas, was to allow the people of the region to enjoy this Christmas in peace.
