ACCRA, Ghana: The Queen's Baton 2010 Delhi spent its 50th day on road, promoting sport, peace, goodwill and the Commonwealth Games to be held in the Indian capital next October, visiting the Cape Coast Castle and Kakum National Park, locations that sparked varying emotions.
In Cape Coast, about 175km from the Capital, the Baton was taken to the Obama Hall for an audience with Nana Kwamina Nyimfa IX, Adontenhene of Oguaa Traditional Area. An attendant announced the arrival of the Queen's Baton 2010 Delhi and upon getting Nana Nyimfa's nod, it was taken to him. He said he felt privileged to hold the baton and that he had no doubt about the success of the Commonwealth Games.
Local youth then took the baton in a relay to the imposing Cape Coast Castle – which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Built in Cape Coast, the seat of the then Government, it was used for timber and gold trade before it started being utilised as a dungeon. The youth made a human chain of figure 50 to make the 50th day of the Queen's Baton Relay 2010 Delhi on road.
From a location that brought back poignant memories to the free environs of the Kakum National Park was a sea change. In keeping with the Green Games programme of the Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi, the baton was taken to the spectacular Canopy Walk in the Kakum National Park.
The 330m walkway, made of cargo net and wooden planks, offers a different, and even unique, view of the magnificent rainforest ecosystem. It is a set of five bridges built between six trees and is at a height of 40m above ground level, offering visitors the chance to observe flora and fauna in the rainforest.
The Queen's Baton 2010 Delhi will leave Ghana for Nigeria on Friday. Nigeria's Minister and Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC) Sani Ndanusa has said that arrangements are being in place for the Queen's Baton Relay visit to Abuja and Lagos till December 20.
Nigeria has decided to take part in athletics, boxing, wrestling, weightlifting, table tennis and ParaSport for Elite Athletes for Disabled.
