Ejisu (Ash), Dec 17, GNA - The Ghana Education Service (GES) and the United States Agency for International Development have jointly launched a training programme to upgrade reading skills teaching in the Ejisu-Juaben Municipality.

About 800 teachers, school heads and circuit supervisors are benefiting from the week-long programme.

Mrs Agnes Okyere-Gyamfi, the Municipal Director of Education, described as worrying the poor reading habits among pupils at the kindergarten and lower primary levels.

She said it was therefore important that new teaching methodology was adopted to enhance the teaching of reading.

A study conducted in 2007 showed that only 15 per cent of primary three pupils in the country had achieved grade level of proficiency in English.

The generally low reading performance at the basic level of education, she said, was undermining the quality of the entire system.
