Ghana midfielder Michael Essien is among the five nominees for this year's CAF African Player award.

Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o and Didier Drogba from Cote d'Ivoire have also been picked by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the coveted prize.

According to CAF director of communications, Suleiman Habuba, the other nominees are Barcelona stars Yaya Toure and Seydou Keita.

Eto'o is on course to win the CAF award for a record fourth time. Besides being a key player as Barcelona landed a unique treble - UEFA Champions League as well as the Spanish league championship and cup this year - Eto'o also led the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon to qualify for the 2010 World Cup.

Drogba and Essien, both of top English club Chelsea, guided their respective national teams, Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana, to qualify for next year's World Cup in South Africa as well as the Africa Cup of Nations.

Emmanuel Adebayor of Togo and Arsenal was last year's winner of the coveted individual accolade after he beat Egypt and Al Ahly star Mohamed Aboutrika in a keen contest.

The award organisers announced that the award ceremony will take place on February 25 in Dakar, Senegal.
