Rector advices employers on bonuses

The Vice Rector of the Pentecost University College, Prof. Kwame Bosiako Omane Antwi, has urged employers to desist from the culture of bonus as incentive measures in meeting the financial targets of accountants.

According to him, this culture breeds corruption among professional accountants and financial experts, because they would be rewarded, adding, such interventions were not sustainable in enhancing cooperate governance in any institution

He made this submission at a seminar organised by the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA) Ghana, dubbed “Accountants for business employers,” in Accra.

The seminar was aimed at sensitising accountants in the country to improve their skills, to enable them achieve good working systems within the Ghanaian economy.

Prof. Antwi called on accountants in Ghana to upgrade their skills to match up with global trends in finance and economic sustainability.

He indicated that the recent oil discovery would bring more businesses to the country, and encouraged accountants to adapt to modern trends of the accountancy profession.

On the part of the Country Manager of ACCA Ghana, Mrs. Gifty Ofori, she said the alignment of the Employers' Association of Ghana (GEA) with the ACCA, would play a key role in building a global accountancy, whilst influencing and shaping public policy, as well as demonstrating strong leadership in education, training, and ethics.

She hinted that the association had developed a product known as 'Approved Employers Scheme,' to encourage best practices among organisations in the country.

“And indeed, if an organisation passes the stringent criteria used in getting his endorsement, it stands to reason that it is an organisation with high standards. Competition is on the rise, one would want to be one stride ahead of the times,” Mrs. Ofori added.

The Head of Human Resource of the Ghana Employers' Association, Mr. Vector Atta- Amponsah, called on the ACCA Ghana to launch a crusade on best practices of accounting and financial management in the country.

According to Mr. Atta- Amponsah, this initiative would enhance the image of the ACCA, thereby encouraging young professionals to emphasise on value and integrity in building a credible business environment to attract investment opportunities into the country.
