Committee working on modalities for UDS Medical campus in Kintampo

Accra, Nov. 24, GNA -The Medical School of the University of Development Studies (UDS) is expected to establish a campus at Kintampo in the Brong-Ahafo Region to train allied health personnel.

A committee has been set up to work out the modalities for establishing the campus.

Mr Alex Tettey-Enyo, Minister of Education, said these on Tuesday in response to a question in Parliament.

He said currently, the facilities at Kintampo were being used by the Ministry of Health as a centre for the training of medical assistants.

Mr Tettey-Enyo said the committee was to work out future arrangements with the Ministry of Health on how to go about establishing the medical campus.

Mrs Juliana Azumah-Mensah, Minister of Tourism, who was also in the House to respond to questions, said the Ministry was constructing a tourist facility at the Adasawase Waterfalls and caves in the Atiwa constituency for the purposes of providing basic facilities such as information centre for visitors, a catering area and washrooms, among others.

She said the facility was at roofing level and expected to be completed and made operational by the second quarter of 2010, subject to the availability of funds.

The Minister was responding to a question on steps being taken to improve facilities at Adasawase to make it a major tourist site.

In response to another question, the Minister said the active involvement in the management of community-based eco tourism sites, as was the case with the Mount Gemi and Amedzofe waterfalls in the Volta Region, was highly commendable.

She said while the local involvement in the development of the resources heightened community awareness in the protection and conservation of natural resources, the proceeds from tourists' visits generated revenue to support the development of social infrastructure in the community.

The Minister was responding to a question on programmes the Ministry had to assist tourist sites in some parts of the Volta Region including the Mount Gemi and Amedzofe Waterfalls.

She said in line with the decentralization policy, the district assemblies had been mandated to incorporate the development of tourist sites in their annual plans and make budgetary allocations to developt these sites.
