Juaso (Ash), Nov. 19, GNA - Road accidents on the Nnadieso- Konongo stretch of the Kumasi/Accra highway in the Asante Akim-South District has seen a sharp decline this year.
Between January and June, 11 road accidents were recorded out of which eight died as against 39 cases which claimed 57 lives within the same period in 2008.
Mr. De-graft Forkuo, the District Chief Executive, said this in his session address at the assembly's third ordinary meeting at Juaso on Wednesday.
He said as part of measures to check road accidents in the district, the assembly was liaising with the Ghana Highway Authority to construct speed rumps at the Juaso junction and other accident prone spots on the highway.
While acknowledging that there was peace in the district, he appealed to chiefs to avoid chieftaincy disputes that were a major threat to security in the district.
On education, Mr. Forkuo said the number of schools under the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) in the district had increased from two to eight with 1,354 pupils benefiting from the programme.
Mr. Forkuo expressed concern about the lack of infrastructure at Juaso and Ofoase Senior High schools and called on the assembly to make allocations for the two schools in its next budget.
He advocated the re-introduction of Best Teachers Awards which has not been held in the last seven years to help improve on the standard of education in the district.
Mr. Charles Nana Yaw Osei, the Presiding Member, reminded members of the assembly to serve the interest of the electorate.
