Kumasi, Nov 18, GNA - A 34-year old salesman, who has posed as a policeman and extorted money from drivers in the Kumasi Metropolis was on Wednesday arrested.

Charles Nkansah, who was being held in custody at the Kumasi Central Police Station, would soon be put before court.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Patrick Timbilla, the Ashanti Regional Commander, told journalists that the suspect introduced himself to a taxi cab driver as a Police officer and asked the driver to convey him to the Central Police barracks, which he obliged.

DCOP Timbilla said Nkansah ordered the driver to send him to his house at Abuakwa and when they got near a police barrier at Tanoso, the suspect became uneasy and tried to hide in the car with the excuse that he did not want his colleagues to see him.

DCOP Timbillah said the Police signalled the driver to stop and wanted to known why the passenger had covered his face.

The Police asked Nkansah to produce police identification card but he could not do so and he was arrested.

DCOP Timbillah said drivers who had fallen victim to the activities of Nkansah on hearing of his arrest, went to the Central Police Station to lodge complaints.

The Regional Police Commander said the Police had received reports of civilians who were parading themselves as Police officers and duping people.
