Majority Leader urges Parliamentary Committees to expedite action

Accra, Nov 3, GNA - Mr. Alban S.K Bagbin, Majority Leader in Parliament, on Tuesday advised his colleagues in various select committees of the House to expedite action on their deliberations to avoid rushing through programmes towards the end of the session.

"Committees have enormous work to do and that is why we try to rise early enough to enable them to sit and deliberate on issues put before them for execution during this session".

Mr. Bagbin gave this advice when he proposed for the adjournment of sitting to allow various committees to meet and compose their reports for the floor of parliament in subsequent sittings.

He said the annual budget that would soon be presented to Parliament was likely to supersede all other deliberations in the House and therefore could affect other meetings.

Mr. Bagbin appealed to members to be punctual in order to come out with good reports that would be acceptable and beneficial to the House and the country.

Earlier, Mr. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, a Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development who was in the house on behalf of his Minister to answer questions, said the government would depend on the outcome of the forthcoming 2010 population census to determine the number new districts that would be created.

This was when Mr. George Kuntu Blankson, Member for Mfantseman East, wanted to know when Mfantseman East Municipal Assembly would be bifurcated.

He also mentioned that satellite markets and re-settlement grounds were being created at Amasaman in the Greater Accra Region and other areas for hawkers who would be affected by the current decongestion exercise in some metropolitan areas.
