Two pupils from the Asare Oppong School Complex in Takoradi Rosemary Konotey and Samuel Assayaw have been selected to represent the Western Region at the 20th anniversary celebration of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, at Dodowa in the Greater Accra Region.
The Western Regional Metro Director of the Department of Children, Faustian Otabil who is accompanying the children told Radio Ghana that the children will among other things visit the College of Physicians and Parliament House and also have a roundtable interaction with the President, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, Parliamentarians, and Ministers of State.
She said, Ghana is the first country to rectify the convention on the Rights of the Child. It is for this reason that the Department of Children has been embarking on advocacy, research and implementation of good policies to ensure that the rights of children are respected by all.
The pupils expressed joy over their selection and said this will give them the opportunity to learn about their rights.
The Headmistress of Asare Oppong School Complex, Madam Mercy Araba Annan, said children gain self confidence when they know their rights.
