Shell Awards Mechanics
Shell Ghana has designed an innovative award system to encourage mechanics in the country to strive for excellence.
The Shell Mechanic of the Year Award will employ a rigorous, but mechanic friendly criterion to select 10 finalists, with three receiving very attractive rewards, including training and factory visits in South Africa.
The need to sharpen the skills of the country’s mechanics is very crucial in view of the hi-tech vehicles now coming onto the market. It is also necessary for good maintenance culture, the lack of which has been identified as a major cause of accidents on the roads.
Under the award scheme, which is being conducted in collaboration with the Ghana National Association of Garages, 150 mechanics would be selected across the country after they complete application forms.
The completed forms would then be returned to any Shell Filling Station or the association’s offices with any label of Shell lubricants.
According to the company, the best 150 applicants selected would receive formal training in areas such as engines and functions; maintenance practice; lubricants; tyres and auto air conditioning, after which a test would be conducted to select the best 10 mechanics.
The Business to Business Manager of Shell Ghana-Togo, Mr Sampson Annoh-Quarshie, told the Daily Graphic that the finalists would then move on to the last stage where they would be required to diagnose and repair vehicles within a specified period, with the faster candidate being crowned the winner.
Mr Annoh-Quarshie said the Mechanic of the Year 2009 would have the opportunity to visit an automobile plant in South Africa, receive gifts, a certificate and a plaque, and be made an ambassador of mechanics during the year of reign.
