Disarm Illegal Firearm Holders - NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the security agencies to ensure that persons in the Chereponi constituency who possessed illegal firearms were disarmed before the conduct of the by-election on September 29, 2009.

According to the party, information gathered on the ground indicated that some persons in the constituency possessed small arms, which they intended to use to cause mayhem during the election.

Speaking at a press conference in Tamale, the General Secretary of the NDC, Mr Asiedu Nketia, who had just ended a two-day campaign tour of Chereponi, alleged that a senior party official had confessed to possessing illegal firearms.

He further alleged that the party official made the confession to the chief of Chereponi, Fame Jaminja Malba Gomna and had indicated to the chief that the weapons were to be used by members of a certain party to defend themselves, if they were attacked during the election.

Mr Nketiah, therefore, entreated the police to seize the weapons before the election.

Even though the general secretary has these concerns, he is, however, full of praises for the security and the people of Chereponi.

“Credit has to go to the people and the security services for acting in accordance with the law as that has contributed to preserving law and order in Chereponi,” he said.
