Some farms in the Upper East Region have already been hit by the first wave of floodwaters from the Bagre dam after it was opened by Burkinabe authorities on Thursday.

The Upper East Regional Minister Mark Woyongo who toured some of the communities said some farmers run the risk of loosing everything they cultivated due to the floods.

Burkinabe authorities announced the opening of the Bagre dam to free water from the dam.

Each year the dam is opened, it causes havoc to life and property of residents in mostly the upper East, Northern and Upper West Regions.

Mr Woyongo said for now, residents who have moved to higher grounds are perching with relatives and friends while effort is made to organise accommodation for them.

He told Joy News that although some temporary shelter is being made available, long-term structures must be built to house victims in future.

Meanwhile the National Disaster Management Organisation, says it's Officers in the Region are on red alert and will react swiftly to avert calamity.

National Coordinator Kofi Portuphy says his outfit will liaise with the military if need be.
