Accra , Aug 31, GNA - The Adenta Constituency in the Greater Accra Region is to produce high quality snails within two years to boost the availability of the commodity on the domestic market, Mr Adu Kojo Asare, Member of Parliament for the Constituency, said on Monday.
He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Monday that "Adenta Constituency will carve a niche in the production of snail in large quantities."
He said land, wooden boxes and mother snails were available for the take-off of the project, which would absorb the youth in the area.
Mr Asare said 10 people had already been trained to start production, two of whom would be training others who want to go into the venture.
"We will not give them money but rather logistics that will help them produce to avoid the situation where money for such purposes ends up in the pockets of people," he said.
The MP said the constituency had four electoral areas and each would have a snail production point.
He said he established the Adenta Youth Choir to help the youth direct their time and energy into productive activities aimed at teaching them good morals.
Mr. Asare blamed the water problem in the area on some self-seeking businessmen who hoarded the commodity for sale at exorbitant prices.
He said because of power problems there had been irregular provision of water in the area and pledged government's intervention within a short time.
Mr. Asare said there was budgetary allocation for the construction of the roads in the area and that work would soon begin.
