Metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies have been asked to take a keen interest in the development of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), to ensure its smooth implementation in the country.

The Scheme Manager for the Nanumba South District, Mr. Issah Abdallah, made the call when he was answering questions on the development of the NHIS in the area during the First Ordinary Meeting of the Assembly.

Mr. Abdallah observed that the fortunes associated with the scheme, could be turned around if DCEs take a keen interest in the day-to-day activities of it

He therefore called on them to go the extra mile and show more commitment, to ensure that the scheme is properly catered for.

The Nanumba South NHIS Manager pointed out that most of the residents in the area had joined nearby schemes at Nanumba North and Zabzugu, due to the late take off of the scheme in the district.

He therefore appealed to the assembly members around the 'Overseas' communities who share boundaries with those districts, to educate their people to return to their areas of origin to ensure the growth of the scheme.

Mr. Abdallah also appealed to the district assemblies and the DCEs to be committed to the welfare of the people, by ensuring that they put in place mechanisms to improve upon the scheme to offer quality healthcare to their people.

He mentioned lack of means of transport as the major challenge of the scheme, and appealed to the district to consider, as a matter of urgency, in providing motor bikes among others, to enable the scheme reach out to many people, especially in the overseas areas.
