Accra, July 4, GNA - Former President John Agyekum Kufuor returned home
on Friday night after a 10-day working visit to Geneva, Switzerland and
Washington DC, USA, where he was made member of the Board of Directors of
the Leon Sullivan Foundation.
The Sullivan Foundation was established to carry on the missionary work
of the late Reverend Leon Howard Sullivan, civil rights pioneer and
unflagging campaigner against apartheid.
A statement issued by Mr Franck Agyekum, Press Secretary, Office of the
Former President, said the Foundation's mission was to advocate for the poor
and disadvantaged worldwide – with a special focus on Africa. The Board is
currently chaired by Ambassador Andrew Young, former US permanent
representative to the United Nations.
It said while in Washington, former President Kufuor attended the second
session of the High-Level Commission on Modernization of the World Bank,
formed early this year by the Bank.
The 12-member body chaired by former Mexican President, Ernesto
Zedillo, is tasked with making recommendations on how the institution is
governed so that it can better fulfill its mission of overcoming global
poverty. The Commission held its first meeting about a month ago.
The statement said in Geneva, former President Kufuor addressed the
2009 conference of the Global Humanitarian Forum, founded in 2007 by Dr Kofi
Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations.
The Forum is an international humanitarian organization that fosters
dialogue and brokers partnership to strengthen the international community's
ability to address more efficiently, current and emerging.
The theme of this year's conference was: 'Human Impact of Climate
Change'
