Trader granted 5000 Ghana Cedis bail over fraud.

Kumasi, July 02, GNA - A Kumasi Circuit Court has granted bail in the sum of 5000 Ghana Cedis to Anthony Buckman for issuing a fake cheque.

Buckman pleaded guilty to the charge and would re-appear before the Court on July 7, 2009.

Prosecuting Police Inspector Nana Amofa, told the Court presided over by Mr. Eric Baah that on May 31, 2009, the accused contacted the complainant to supply him with 260 pieces of plywood worth 3,100 Ghana Cedis, to sell.

The accused issued a cheque of 2,000 Ghana Cedis on June 2, 2009, for part-payment and promised to pay the balance after selling the items.

Chief Inspector Nana Amofa said the complainant collected the cheque and released the items to the accused in the presence of a witness and presented the cheque dated June 2, 2009 at the Stadium branch of Ecobank in Kumasi.

He said the cheque was suspected to be fake because it was not properly signed, and that since then all efforts to reach the accused to make the necessary corrections on the cheque proved futile.

The Prosecution added that the complainant had information that the accused was hiding at Afful-Nkwanta, a suburb of Kumasi and reported the case to the police. The accused was arrested and later admitted the offence during police interrogations.
