Wa Municipal Assembly fails again to elect PM

WA, June 30, GNA – The Wa Municipal Assembly (WMA), on Monday has for the second time failed to endorse the only candidate contesting the position of Presiding Member (PM) for the assembly.

Mr. Adams Suleiman, assembly member for Boli Electoral Area, polled 15 out of the 25 votes cast in the election conducted by officials of the Electoral Commission (EC), which fell short of the 18 votes he needed to become Presiding Member of the 27-member Assembly.

Before the election, officials of the EC, the Media and observers waited for about five hours as the assembly members went into a close door meeting apparently to build consensus.

The assembly adjourned voting indefinitely to enable more consultations to take place before another date could be fixed.

In the first balloting on Wednesday, June 24, Mr. Suleiman obtained 16 votes out of the 25 votes cast.

Since the inception of the assembly concept in 1988, election of a PM for the assembly had on several occasions been a thorny issue as there has always been series of voting before somebody was eventually elected.
