Gov`t to revamp rail sector

The government has released a total of $2 million to the management of Ghana Railways Company (GRC) for the revamping of the western rail line.

The western rail is the main source of revenue generation for the company, and the move has been hailed by experts in the rail industry. The decision forms part of the government's short term vision of revamping the Railway Company, which has been under performing for a decade now.

The Minister of Transportation, Mr. Mike Hammah, who disclosed this at a meeting with workers of the company, added that the revamping of the Accra to Tema rail line was also a major priority of the government.

He therefore directed the Acting Managing Director of the GRC to tell the workers when the revitalisation of the western rail line would commence. Minister Hammah also revealed that government had appointed a consultancy firm to thoroughly study the problems of the company, and prescribe solutions to it.

The Consultancy firm which has already started work has submitted an interim report to the ministry.

The Minister assured the workers that the government had their welfare at heart, and would do everything possible to revamp the company.

According to the Minister, the government sees the transportation sector as the only means by which the country could achieve the Middle Income Status. He advised the management to run a transparent administration, and also involve the workers in the running of the company.

During question time, the workers appealed to the government to increase their salaries by 100%. Responding, Minister Hammah told the workers that their Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) would soon be reviewed, with the view to finding a solution to their wages and salaries problems.

The Deputy Minister of the sector, Madam Dzifa Attivor, on her part, told the workers that government was aware of their pains regarding their salaries, and assured them that everything possible was being done to correct them.
