By Ernest Best Anane, Kumasi - Ghanaian Chronicle

THE SUBIN Sub-Metro Health Insurance Scheme has registered a total of 10,000 people to access quality healthcare under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) last Thursday.

Those registered, include pregnant women, street-children, hawkers and porters, and was free. The massive registration took place at the Kejetia Terminal, where most of them live.

Mrs. Leticia Osei Poku, Ashanti Regional Scheme Manager, advised Ghanaians to adopt the habit of cleanliness, in order to avoid contracting sanitation-related diseases like cholera and diarrheoa, which were caused by filth.

She further congratulated the Subin Sub-Metro Scheme Management for the good work, and appealed to them to continue such a programme, if possible, once a year, to help the needy who can't afford to pay the premium, and cautioned the general public, who are not yet registered, to do so in time, for it has come to help every citizen of Ghana.

Mrs. Osei Poku further disclosed that it was the will of the previous and the current government that every Ghanaian would live a healthy life, and advised the public to renew their membership to ensure that 60 to70% of the population of the region would be registered at the close of the year.

Mr. Fred Kpadoh, who represented the Metropolitan Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Authority (KMA), Mr. Samuel Sarpong, as guest speaker, expressed his gratitude to the management and staff of the Subin Sub-Metro Health Insurance, for mooting the idea of bringing porters and street children of the metropolis together, to benefit from the National Health Insurance Scheme.

Mr. Kpadoh stressed that the nation depended largely on the wellbeing of the present youth, especially girls, whose health are exposed to the dangers of sexual abuse, and all kinds of other abuse, because of the nature of work they indulge in.

He called upon Ghanaians to see the Kayayo issue as a national problem that calls for concerted efforts by the government, concerned individuals, religious bodies and advocacy groups to rise up to the challenge.
