Concerned group wants NPP electoral college expanded
A GROUP known as the Concerned New Patriotic Party (NPP) Activists in Kumasi has endorsed the proposal for an expansion of the electoral college for the selection of party officers and Parliamentary/Presidential candidate(s) of the NPP, which is yet to be tabled at this year's National Delegates conference.
It emphasized that every card bearing member of the NPP should partake in the next delegates' election for the selection of party members for the various positions in the party, most especially for the selection of a Presidential candidate who can lead the party to succeed in the 2012 general elections.
These were contained in a petition presented to the Ashanti Regional Secretariat of the NPP for onward transmission to the National Secretariat. The petitioners embarked on a demonstration through some principal streets of Kumasi before finally arriving at the Secretariat at Bantama, where the Party's Regional Office is located.
The group, made up mostly of the youth displayed placards with inscriptions such as 'NPP not for sale', 'Promote Participatory Democracy', 'No one should try to Torpedo our voting rights', 'we stand to win 2012, involve foot soldiers' and 'Delegates, don't disappoint Ghanaians,' among others.
Presenting the petition, Mr. Peter Oteng, the leader of the group stated that an enlarged electoral college for the NPP would strengthen the Party's internal democratic electoral approach by ensuring that more dedicated and committed party members and foot soldiers, especially at the grassroots, participate in the selection of their leaders at all levels.
“The enlargement of the electoral college of the NPP will encourage more supporters and sympathizers of the party to become full members of the party and further encourage the election of true and committed party members who will be prepared at all times to work assiduously for the party at the various levels of the organization in the party,” he stressed.
He further mentioned that a distended electoral college of the party would also hearten Members of Parliament (MPs), Presidential hopefuls, constituency executives and members interested in holding official positions at any level to invest in the party.
Mr. Kofi Adusei Wiseman, the Bantama Constituency Deputy Organizer of the NPP, who received the petition on behalf of the constituency executives assured the group that he will deliver the petition to the executives and hoped that its contents would be given the necessary attention that it needs.
