The Danish Government has offered a $1.5 million package to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to strengthen its peacekeeping capacity.
The Chief of the Defence Staff, Major-General Peter Blay, who announced this in Accra, said the offer, which would be extended to the GAF annually till 2013, would be used to train soldiers and acquire logistics.
He said this when the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General to the United Nations Mission in Liberia, Ms Ellen Margrethi Loj, called on him at Burma Camp in Accra.
He said the GAF would continue to support the United Nations to provide peace and security for the world, particularly in volatile areas.
He pledged the GAF’s preparedness to support efforts at rebuilding Liberia.
Maj-Gen. Blay appealed to institutions, corporate and international bodies to assist in improving the logistics status of the GAF to enable it to meet the challenges that faced them.
He appealed for assistance to improve the accommodation situation at the Bundase Military Camp for soldiers on training.
Ms Loj commended the GAF for its professionalism and the tremendous support they had offered in maintaining peace and security in Liberia.
She said the recent re-equipment of the Ghanaian Battalion in Liberia demonstrated Ghana’s commitment to ensure peace and security in the sub-region and the world as a whole.
