Tony Aidoo warns supporters of Muntaka

Dr Tony Aidoo

A leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Tony Aidoo, has warned supporters of the immediate past Minister of Youth and Sports, Alhaji Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, who recently tended in his resignation following his exoneration by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) over several allegations levelled against him.

The said allegations were made against Alhaji Muntaka, who also doubles as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawase Constituency in the Ashanti Region, by the then Principal Accountant at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mr Adim Odoom, who, currently has been interdicted by security agencies.

Dr Aidoo was speaking on Radio Gold flagship programme Alhaji and Alhaji last week Saturday.

According to him, the decision by supporters of Mr Muntaka to vandalize offices of the party in the Constituency was unacceptable and must be condemned in no uncertain terms. He said what they did was not the right thing to do and must not be encouraged.

Dr Aidoo, against this background, asked the Asawase MP to restrain his supports by calling on them to desist from such acts.

He explained that by talking to them the MP would be calming them down. He disclosed that he was very happy when it became known that the President had given Mr Muntaka a ministerial position.

“I had a lot of expectations for him as a young and vibrant Minister and was optimistic that he was going to deliver,” Dr. Aidoo disclosed.

However, he made it clear that he became disappointed when about 17 allegations were levelled against him by Mr. Odoom.

He said it is good news that Alhaji Muntaka has been absolved of most of the allegations brought against him, stressing that there are instances he erred referring specifically to the case in which he travelled with his so-called girl friend.

The die-hard NDC member who is also part of the ruling NDC government observed that what has happened to the young Minister is really a dent on his image and political career.

He went on to express that it was essential for him [Alhaji Muntaka] to put behind what has happened to him and re-establish himself to continue his career.

He opined that the there was clear intent of malice and personal vendetta on the part of the Principal Accountant who made those allegations against the MP for Asawase. He said this in the light of the fact that has now been proven that all the allegations were false.

In the estimation of Dr Aidoo even though it is good for the country to have whistle blowers and informants such people must not do these just to malign and destroy the hard-earned reputation of others. Such a measure, he said, defeats the objective of a whistle blower and therefore does not augur well for the country.

He also sharply criticized the Editor-in-Chief of The Daily Searchlight Mr Kenneth Agyei Kuranchie for his written attacks on President John Evans Atta Mills in his column of the paper. He said Mr Kuranchie's description and argument to the effect that the President is anti-peace simply because he visited the Ghana Armed Forces is neither here nor there. He admonished the Editor-in-Chief of The Daily Searchlight to be decent in his write-ups.

Expressing his take on the perennial floods in parts of Accra, Dr Tony Aidoo pointed out that it is about time that the regime of lawful conduct be made to work, asserting that people who break the law must be made to face its full rigours. He did not agree with the assertion held by some that Accra is a flood land and can thus not escape the phenomenon of flood. He was of the view that it was high time that prudent measures are employed to solve this problem once and for all.
