Zoomlion clears over 300 tonnes waste in one night

Zoomlion Company Limited, a leading waste management organisation in Ghana, has in one night cleared a backlog of waste, in excess of 300 tonnes, at the Makola Market in Accra.

According to Mr. Samuel Quarshie, Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) officer in charge of the Ashiedu Keteke Sub Metro, the backlog was created because for over a week, the waste could not be carted to the Malam landfill site, due to a misunderstanding between nearby residents and scavengers at the site.

He was grateful that the AMA authority had resolved the issue; “and this is why we are working now, besides, given the enormity of the waste, we could only work effectively at night, when there is no traffic or unnecessary human interruption.”

Mr. Quarshie said the AMA authorities had to call on Zoomlion Company to assist in the evacuation, as it had the requisite machinery to handle the over 300 tonnes of waste at the Markola Market.

He was of the view that although other private waste management companies were in charge of the Accra Central area, Zoomlion was brought on board to help, as the waste generated in and around the Markola Market could overwhelm many private companies, as they may not have the machinery for evacuation and cleaning.

In an interview with the Accra File, Zoomlion Accra Supervisor of Operations, Mr. Godfred Teye, said Zoomlion was happy to partner the AMA and any other private waste management company to evacuate waste and ensure good sanitation in the country.

He added that Zoomlion quickly deployed trucks, staff and wheel-loaders to facilitate the easy and quick evacuation of the huge waste to the Malam landfill site.

He was optimistic that the problems of landfill sites would soon be a thing of the past, as Zoomlion had acquired a vast landfill site at Abokobi, to help address the problems of waste management in the city.
