Kumasi, June 29, GNA – The Serwaa Nyarko Girls' Senior High School (SHS) in the Kumasi Metropolis, has appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES), organisations and philanthropists to assist the school to construct a science laboratory.
Madam Betty Oppong, Headmistress of the School, said the acquisition of a well-resourced and equipped science laboratory would enhance the teaching of science courses in the school towards the country's scientific and technological advancement.
She was speaking at the maiden Speech and Prize-Giving Day of the School under the theme: “Enhancing Female Education through Better Infrastructure”, in Kumasi at the weekend.
Madam Betty Oppong decried the high rate at which students especially those in SHS One were leaving the school because it could not offer science courses.
Madam Oppong said in this era of globalization science was not only relevant to girls' education but also to their creative abilities to enable them to overcome the challenges facing women.
She said even though the school lacked adequate infrastructure it had in recent times made modest academic progress.
Madam Oppong cited that in the 2007/2008 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), the school chalked 100 per cent passes and commended the teaching staff for their commitment to duty.
She commended the GETfund for donating a 34-seater bus to the school.
Sir Fosuaba Mensah Banahene, former administrator of the
GETfund, urged parents to invest in the education of their children, especially the girl-child, to enable them to acquire skills and knowledge needed for development.
