25 June - Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon departs later today for Trieste, Italy, for a series of meetings with international partners focusing on the Middle East and Afghanistan, his spokesperson said today.

On Friday, Mr. Ban will attend a meeting of the Middle East Quartet, which comprises the UN, European Union, Russia and the United States.

Also in Trieste on Friday, the Secretary-General will meet with members of the League of Arab States' follow-up committee on the Arab Peace Initiative, the Saudi plan for full Arab peace with Israel in return for full withdrawal from territory it seized in 1967.

In addition, he will attend a meeting of the Group of Eight (G8) Foreign Ministers on Afghanistan.

“That gathering will look at the situation in Afghanistan from a regional perspective. It will touch on themes such as cooperation in border management and countering illicit drug trafficking,” UN spokesperson Michele Montas told reporters.
