The Dean of School of Research and Graduate Studies of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Prof. Thomas Esilfie has expressed the need for universities to be actively involved in post-graduate education by churning out teachers with higher degrees to ensure the continuity of the academic functions of the university.
It is therefore incumbent on universities to produce academics with advance degree to complement and invigorate academic studies in their facilities.
Prof. Esilifie was speaking at a lecture to mark this year's celebration of Dean's Day at the UEW.
The day affords deans of the various faculties the opportunity to showcase their staff and the need to restructure some programmes of the university.
It was organised and sponsored by the university in collaboration with the Carnergie Corporation of New York.
In all, fourteen post-graduate students from the seven faculties of the three campuses of the university received awards, including books, souvenirs and certificates of honour for their sterling academic performance.
Speaking on the theme' 'The future post-graduate education at the UEW, the need for paradigm shift', Prof. Esilifie said that the issue of inadequate number of academic staff to teach advance programmes did not give room to produce advance degree holders.
He said 17 departments were running post-graduate studies between 2006 to 2009, adding that 145 students graduated in 2008 in various programmes and the first batch of PHD students would graduate in September 2009.
He observed that sponsoring students to undertake post-graduate training abroad had become expensive and called on other universities to join the crusade in lobbying government to create a separate budget for graduate education.
The Vice-Chancellor of the UEW, Prof. Akwasi Asabre-Ameyaw who chaired the function, maintained that the school would produce post-graduate students in its faculties.
