Business man fined two hundred and forty Ghana cedis for assault

Tema, May 15, GNA – James Mensah Sarpong, a businessman in Tema, was on Friday fined GH ¢240.00 by the Tema Circuit Court “B” for assault.

In default, he would serve a twelve-month jail term in hard labour.

Sarpong who pleaded guilty to the charge, will also pay GH ¢ 200.00 as compensation to complainant, Madam Agnes Teye.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Evelyn Susuawu, told the court presided over by Mrs Ananda Aikins that Madam Teye on March 20, 2009, was attacked by the accused when she was returning a bench she had taken from a shop close to that of his at Tema Community two.

She said without any provocation the accused person attacked and beat her with a belt, until she was rescued by the people around.

Complainant reported to the Police and she was issued with a medical form to attend hospital.

On her way home, accused again hit Agnes with a metal bar from behind leaving unconscious.

Realizing the seriousness of his act, Sarpong went into hiding.

He was arrested a week later by the Police after he had re-surfaced.
