Tema, May 14, GNA – The mandate of Tema Development Corporation (TDC) to plan and develop the metropolis is still valid and has not expired, its head said on Wednesday.

Mr Joe Abbey, acting Managing Director of the Corporation, said TDC had plans to redevelop and revive communities 'One' and 'Two', which had developed slums.

Mr Abbey made these remarks when the Deputy Minister for Water Resource, Works and Housing, Dr Hanna Louisa Bisiw, paid a working visit to the Corporation and projects it is currently undertaking.

He reiterated the Corporation's mandate, saying it included managing properties.

The TDC has leased lands to organizations for 150 years which will expire in 2081, he added.

He called for harmonization of efforts between the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) and the TDC for effective development, adding that while the role of TMA was political, that of the Corporation was statutory in developing the area.

Mr Abbey appealed to the Minister to help the Corporation complete a conference centre project it had started but was abandoned in 2001.

Dr Bisiw assured that the Ministry would revamp and resource the TDC to properly discharge its mandate and complete its projects, including the conference centre complex.

She expressed satisfaction with the pace of development of 'Community 25' which, she said, used to be bushy.

She however questioned the criteria used in naming streets in the area after noting that six of them were named after former Managing Director of the Corporation, Madam Elizabeth Mansah Banson.
