Driver, 38, arrested for abduction and defiling

Kumasi, April 30, GNA - The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested a 38-year-old driver for detaining and defiling a 12-year-old for more than a year.

Sampson Arthur was arrested following an alarm raised by the victim on April 24. He will soon be arraigned.

Briefing the press in Kumasi, Lance Corporal Godwin Atsu Ahianyo of the Public Affairs Unit said in 2007, the grandmother of the victim, who was then 12 years old, together with her five-year-old brother from Senya Breku in the Central Region came to live with the suspect at Duase near Kenyase in Kumasi.

The grandmother left Kumasi, leaving the children with Arthur.

The suspect in 2008 enquired from the girl whether she had ever had sexual intercourse but she answered no, and since they were sleeping in the same room, he often convinced her to join him on his bed where he had sex with her.

According to the police, the victim alleged that the first time Arthur defiled her was when she woke up and found out the following morning that she was naked and had abdominal pain.

She said she asked Arthur who confirmed it and warned her not to tell anyone else, she would die.

Lance Corporal Ahianyo said the suspect relocated with the kids to Buokrom, also in Kumasi, into an uncompleted building where he continued with his act.

The victim who could not contain it anymore called for help which attracted their neighbours leading to his arrest.

Arthur told the police that he did it under the influence of alcohol and pleaded for mercy.
