LOOK UP TO INFORMAL SECTOR FOR JOBS… Minister tells his people

The Volta Regional Minister, Mr. Joseph Amenowode, has reminded the people in the region that the era where people looked up to the formal sector for employment was over, and that job seekers should now look to the informal sector succour.

He pointed out that government departments no longer employed people, because there was no job avenue in the formal sector.

Mr. Amenowode was speaking at a ceremony to adopt two Canadian citizens - Mr. Samuel Lingwood and Ms. Annan - as citizens of Have-Andoh Number Two, to assist the people in their development activities.

The two Canadians have rendered two months voluntary service with a Have-based non governmental organisation (NGO), the Environmental Development Youth Movement in the Hohoe Municipality.

The Minister explained that the only employment available in the formal sector were the security services, who from time to time advertised for enlistment.

He advised the people not to dream of traveling abroad to work, because conditions there were not as rosy as they perceived.

Mr. Amenowode said there were many credit facilities on a non-partisan basis that the youth could access, to help better their standard of living.

He continued that no community could progress without taking education seriously, and urged the people to see education as key to development.

He asked the people to desist from practices that would undermine their education.

Mr. Amenowode commended the Executive Director of the Environmental Development Youth Movement (EDYM), Mr. Paul Kpai, for his contribution to development activities in the area, and urged the people to embrace the efforts of Mr. Kpai to help the accelerate development of the area.

Mr. Paul Kpai said his outfit was working hard to promote development activities in the area through collaborative efforts with other development partners, particularly in the areas of job creation, to help make life more comfortable for the people.

Mr. Kpai disclosed that an American volunteer service organisation, Village Volunteers, had been assisting the people of Have for the past four years, particularly in the areas of education.

They have so far rehabilitated an old building into a library for the community.

The Executive Director said his organisation, in collaboration with an NGO, Development Institute, would start a conservation project to plant trees along major streams in the area, to protect the water bodies from destruction through human activities.
