FA reject speculation involving Sulley

The Ghana Football Association has rejected media reports linking Black Stars player, Sulley Muntari to a quit threat after an off field incident at the Baba Yara Stadium last Sunday.

Sulley Muntari who set up Ghana's opening goal with a perfect cross in the 1-0 win over Benin in the joint 2010 African Nations Cup and World Cup qualifying has come under criticisms for events off the field.

The Ghana international has received bad press following a pre-kickoff incident at the stadium involving the player's fiancée, Menaye Donkor and the police as she tried to gain access to the media tribune at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Events off the field has been blown out of proportion with the Inter Milan star reported by some sections of the local media to have demanded an apology from the President of the FA and threatened to quit playing for the national team.

But the FA has denied the speculation and called for calm while insisting on circumspection by the local media.

“The Ghana Football Association is aware of an incident which happened at the press box area some 10 minutes before kickoff at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi involving Menaye Donkor, fiancée of Sulley Muntari and the Police.

“The FA has referred the matter to the Ashanti Regional Police Command for the necessary action to be taken. At this stage, we cannot say anything more since we are yet to receive an update from the Police Command over the matter,” an FA statement read.

President of the Ghana Football Association Kwesi Nyantakyi has also denied reports by a section of the media that the Ghana international demanded an apology from him to the fiancée.

“These are very wild allegations that have been thrown out there.

“I want to categorically state that at no point in time has Sulley Muntari or anyone connected to him demanded of me an apology to the player's fiancée because of the incidence which happened some minutes before the game.

“I hope this ends the continuous discussion of an untruth,” President of the FA, Kwesi Nyantakyi said.

Also claims that the player has threatened to quit the national team until the FA apologises to his fiancée are untrue, says the FA.

“Sulley Muntari has not served anyone with such a notice. The player has denied ever making such statements.

“He is a member of the team and remains as such. No decision has been taken by him on his status as a Ghana player. Speculations are inevitable but we plead that issues are discussed professionally in the media.”
