Churches must invest more in social services for the benefit of society and the country at large, the Chairman of the Akuapem Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Reverend Dr Joseph Obiri Mantey has said.
He said the church's role must complement the efforts of government in providing social relief for the vulnerable and oppressed in society. This, he noted, should not be detached from the preaching of the gospel.
Preaching the sermon to launch the 150 anniversary of the Trinity Presbyterian Church at Mampong on Sunday, he urged people to be conscious of their lifestyles and contributed generously towards the work of God.
He said the Presbyterian Church had contributed immensely to society and mentioned the provision of schools, hospitals and clinics.
Rev. Dr. Mantey said the Church had also impacted on the lives of people through its uncompromised values and principles on discipline.
He stressed that apart from the direct benefits derived from the early missionaries, they also contributed in the area of agriculture.
Dr Mantey said the anniversary must be climaxed with innovative ways of reaching out to people with the Gospel of Christ especially to the poor, needy and the marginalized that form the majority in the society.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Akropong, Mr William Ofori Boafo, who was the guest of honour called on Christians to always stand for the truth in the society.
He said Christians must be interested in activities within their communities to ensure that high moral values were exhibited in all endeavors.
A fundraising to expand the church and the building of a manse, yielded GH¢90,000 with the MP donating GH¢1,000.
