A CADET Corp has been formed at the Effiduase Secondary Commercial School (EFFISCO), at Effiduase in Ashanti, to help instil discipline among the students.

Lt. Adu Danso, Commander of the 4th Battalion Infantry, in Kumasi, who reviewed the cadet corp at the inaugural ceremony last week, Friday, cautioned them not to see themselves as military or police personnel deployed on campus, or to harass their colleagues. He charged them to see themselves as tools for harmony and orderliness.

The Ashanti regional Director of Education, Mr. J. K. Onyinah, who was the Guest of Honour noted that the acquisition of relevant skills and academic knowledge without acceptable moral values and discipline was meaningless.

According to him, discipline was an essential part of any purposeful education since it would be difficult to achieve set goals without it.

The education Director, therefore, admonished the students to stay away from social vices like rioting, drug abuse, occultism, and sexual immorality and examination malpractices. He asked the teachers to guide the cadet corps to function well and play their role effectively and efficiently.

The headmaster of the school, Mr. Kwaku Obeng-Boateng, noted that the role of the army in the country's development cannot be overemphasized since they help in the maintenance of peace and order, protect the nation against foreign invasion as well as providing disaster relief services.

“The role of the army has influenced the lives of educational Institutions, both at the secondary and tertiary levels, hence the springing up of cadet corps in many schools,” he stated.

Mr. Obeng-Boateng emphasized that the formation of the Cadet Corps in schools was a laudable idea since the inherent discipline in the training had helped to shape their behaviour ands mould them to be patriotic and hard working.

He hoped the students would refrain from all acts of lawlessness, insubordination, display of impudence, disrespect and unruly behaviour which have characterized the conduct of some students in recent times.

Nana Adu Ameyaw II, Effiduasehene, Mr. Afari Gyem, District Co-ordinating Director of Sekyere East, Mr. Sarfo Kantanka, District Director of Education and the Member of Parliament, Hon. Frank Boakye Agyen were present at the inauguration.
