By Edmond Gyebi, Tamale - Ghanaian Chronicle

The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Mr. Kwesi Ahwoi has commissioned a GH¢1.44 million rehabilitated Dam to serve as the only source of drinking water for the Chiefs and people of Fooshegu in the Tamale Metropolis.

The people of Fooshegu initiated the rehabilitation of the dam in 2008 with technical and financial support from the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) and the German Development Service (DED) to serve about 15 communities around the area.

The Minister of Food and Agriculture stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government was fully committed to implement its policies to ensure the sustainability of food security in the country. He therefore, encouraged all Ghanaians to support polices of the government to ensure the nation achieve economic independence.

The Food and Agriculture Minister expressed the need for the people of Fooshegu to coexist peacefully, saying the greatest enemy of the people in the North is poverty, ignorance, disease and ethnic friction. Country Directors of GTZ and DED, Dr. Fred Brandi and Mr. Kay Andraschko respectively, in separate speeches urged the community members to preserve the dam and its resources for future generations.

They noted that, water is more or less a unifying element rather than a dividing factor. In a speech read on behalf of the Chief, Fooshegu Na said the project has come to relief them from their hardship.

The Northern Regional Minister, Stephen Sumani Nayina also appealed to the youth of Fooshegu to take advantage of the dam to go into serious agro-business rather than wasting their energies on unprofitable ventures such as fighting.
