GNAT committed to welfare of members – Duncan-Adanusa

The General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Mrs Irene Duncan-Adanusa has said that the Association remains committed to the welfare of its members to encourage them to give of their best in furtherance of its quality public education agenda.

She, however, said the Association would not “condone the actions of teachers who kick against the code of professional conduct guiding the profession”.

Mrs Duncan-Adanusa was reacting in Accra to recent cases of alleged professional malfeasance on the part of some teachers in various parts of the country.

She noted that since teachers were role models in the various communities they worked, they must endeavour to live above reproach.

Mrs Duncan-Adanusa, expressed worry at the death of a 14 year-old girl after she was flogged by Mr Kwabena Gyan, a teacher at Oda Nkwanta Local Authority Primary “B” School in the Eastern Region, and expressed her condolence to the bereaved family.

She dismissed claim that GNAT had been insensitive to the plight of the teacher, explaining that GNAT responded by assembling legal brains to represent Mr. Gyan in court since it believed in the rule of law.

Mrs Duncan-Adanusa gave the names of the five-member team of lawyers as, Adu Amankwa of Gyinae Chambers (leader of the group), Kwame Boni (from the GNAT National Secretariat), Anthony Boateng, Enoch Yirebeyogr and Attafuah.

The General Secretary stated that it was on the plea of the lawyers that the court granted Mr Gyan bail to re-appear on May 19, 2009.
