By Kofi Owusu Aduonum - Ghanaian Chronicle

Sleek fighter Albert Mensah demonstrated brilliance, tenacity and resilience to defend his Africa Boxing Union (ABU) title when he stopped Ayi Bruce in one minute and eleven seconds, in their ABU Super lightweight championship at the Metro TV Academy House yesterday.

From the word go, Mensah (17-3-1) (7KO) relied on his long reach in the cagey encounter, that drew thunderous applause from the well attended crowd. Bruce was also determined to guard against his invincibility, having fought 14 times undefeated and ten by way of knockout, also fought gallantly.

But when he was expected to offer the champion a stiff opposition, he bowed out, to the amazement of the fans who were carried away by the antics that the combatants displayed.

Bruce showed signs of tiredness from the eigth round, but the bell saved him. He resumed round nine more aggressively, but it was Mensah who had led from round three that hit his targets, combining left and right hooks which worked perfectly.

The President of ABU, Houcine Houichi, who graced the occasion decorated Mensah with the title, with support from Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, Mr. Samir Captan, Alhaji Tofiq and GBA boss Mr. Mosses Foh Amoaning.

In other bouts, Ghana's Prosper Ankrah defeated his Nigerian counterparts in a unanimous point decision in their Commonwealth Bantamweight final eliminator, while Obodai Sai handed Joe Nyame a technical knockout in the Super welterweight contest.

George Ashie won against Eben Lamptey in their lightweight contest, while Atoli Moore of the Wisdom Gym overpowered Bukom's George Banson with a unanimous point decision in the second bout of the evening.

The GBA presented boxing equipment worth thousands of Cedis to former World champion Nana Yaw Konadu, who is now the Technical Director in the Brong Ahafo Region.
