Knowledge without moral values and discipline is meaningless – Educationist

Mr Joseph Kwabena Onyinah, Ashanti Regional Director of Education, has observed that acquisition of knowledge and skills without acceptable moral values and discipline was meaningless.

Discipline, he said, was an essential part of any purposeful education.

Mr Onyinah made the observation when launching the “National Students Magazine” published by Advocates for Youth, an NGO at Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) in Kumasi on Saturday.

Present were educationists, religious leaders, parents, teachers and students from KTI, Kumasi Technical School (KSTS), Opoku Ware Senior High School (SHS), Osei Tutu SHS at Asante Akropong, Tweneboa Kodua SHS at Kumawu, SIMMS SHS and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) SHS.

Mr Onyinah said students needed to be imbued with discipline and moral values to help them appreciate societal norms and develop good conscience in making informed choices.

“Without discipline and acceptable moral values, it would be difficult and sometimes impossible to achieve set goals in life. It is only when a student exhibits high standard of discipline that he could attain higher academic laurels, he said.

Mr Onyinah expressed concern about some students who engaged in rioting, drug abuse, occultism, immorality and examination malpractices that had serious effects on them, their school and society.

Mr Joseph Abaiku Apprey, Principal of KTI noted that technology education was crucial for the country's social, economic and industrial development.

He dismissed the wrong perception in the society that, technical institutes were established for students who did not perform well academically.

Mr Cletus Asare, Chief Executive Officer of Advocate for Youth, urged students to be proactive and allow society to recognise their potentials.

This, he noted, could only be realised, if students discovered and identified their potentials for proper harnessing and development.

Mr Asare said the magazine was published to create a better future for students through reading to acquire knowledge for the benefit of society.
