Some 19 agriculture extension agents drawn from 17 districts in the Eastern Region completed a workshop on seed production technology in Koforidua on Thursday.
The training programme is to enable the region to increase its seed inspectors to 20 to support the production of quality seed.
The region produces cowpea and vegetables seeds, planting materials of other food crops and an average of 270 tons of seed maize annually.
Speaking at the closing ceremony the Eastern Regional Director of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Mr Godwin Ocloo, appealed to the new seed inspectors to take their new roles serious and ensure that the region produces good quality seed to support agriculture.
Mr Ocloo said the training programme became necessary following concerns by seed producers in the region that seed inspectors were not many and this is delaying their work.
He said the ministry decided to ensure that at least every district in the region gets a Seed Inspector to help meet the challenge.
The Greater Accra and Eastern Regional Seed Co-ordinator, Mrs Lydia Kwesitsu, said the training was the second to upgrade the knowledge of seed inspectors and ensure the production of quality seed within the zone.
