The Eastern Regional Police on Wednesday arrested a taxi driver with eight bags of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp in black polythene bags at Amanhyia on the Suhum/Koforidua road.

The driver, Ebenezer K. Nartey, 40, was driving an Opel Cadet with registration number GT 1191 T when the vehicle was intercepted.

The Eastern Regional Crime Officer, Ms Anyonam Akpasu, said when the vehicle was intercepted, the driver claimed he was hired by the owner of the bags to transport the goods from Nkurakan to Suhum.

She said the suspect claimed that the owner of the goods was in the vehicle with him at the time police dispatch riders stopped the vehicle but the police officers said they saw only the driver in the vehicle.
