MAR 18, 2009 LISTEN

The family of retired Captain Hugo Benzin Huppenbauer of the Ghana Armed Forces, on Tuesday paid a courtesy call on former President Jerry Rawlings to formerly inform him of his passing away.

Captain (Retd) Hugo Benzin Huppenbauer died at the Intensive Care unit of the 37 Military Hospital in Accra on March 4, after a short illness.

The family members, his widow Mrs Caroline Huppenbauer, sons, daughters and brothers including Prince Agbenohevi, were led by Mr. Fletcher-Dzoleto, also a brother and elder of the family.

Former President Rawlings paid glowing tribute to the fallen soldier, and recalled how his amiable character endeared him to many officers and men of the Ghana Armed Forces, so much so that his firm grips of situations and particularly the respect he enjoyed among the ranks helped stalled the carnage that could have attended the 1979 coup.

“He was a nice gentleman for the young soldiers to look up to,” said the former President.

With the former president were some of his aides, Dr. Caeser and Kofi Adams.
