Horror at Aboaso...11 year old boy mutilated

17.03.2009 LISTEN
By Issah Alhassan, Kumasi - Ghanaian Chronicle

The Mampongteng District Police Commander has begun investigations into circumstances that led to the callous murder of an 11 year old pupil of the Aboaso Local Authority Primary School.

The body of Oti Akenten, a native of the town, was on Saturday 14th March this year, found beside a local stream completely mutilated, in what could possibly be another incident of a ritual murder.

The throat of the deceased had been cut off, the face disfigured, the stomach dissected, and the contents taken away, leaving the grotesque body along the bank of a stream.

Narrating the bizarre incident to The Chronicle, a relative of the deceased said Oti Akenten, who is sent every evening from Aboaso to a nearby town called Ntonso to present meals to his grandfather and come back before 6:00 p.m., failed to return home at the said time last Sunday the 8th of March, after embarking on his usual errand, much to the surprise of the family,

Upon inquiry from his grandfather, the parents of the deceased were told Oti had not come to Ntonso that day, prompting the family to mount a search for the boy, but to no avail.

The search however continued for several days without any further information, compelling the family to lodge a complaint with the Mamponteng District Police Command.

The Chief of the community, further organised the people of the town to search for the lost boy, but that also did not produce any positive response, as the boy was nowhere to be found.

Still not convinced, some youth in the community mounted a fresh search on the outskirts of the town.

On approaching a small stream in the bush called, Mimi, they found a young man running away from the direction of the river holding a machete, and upon suspicion they arrested him.

They however approached further towards the river, detected the smell of a decayed body and followed the route only to discover the body of Oti lying beside the river completely disfigured. The young man, whose name has been withheld for security reasons, was subsequently handed over to the police.

Meanwhile, personnel of the Mamponteng District Police Command have confirmed the murder of Oti, and the subsequent arrest of the suspect, but have declined to give any further details since investigations were still ongoing.
